NUMBER OF BATHERS
PROMPT RESCUE WORK

NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day. Tha busiest day in four years was experienced by life-savers at the Fitzroy and Strandon beaches yesterday, when upwards of a dozen people were rescued from the surf in a more or less distressed condition.
Excellent work was performed by beach patrols, who gave a remarkable demonstration of the value of organised- life-saving.
The exceptional heat of the past few days sent thousands of people to the beaches. Under the influence of a fairly strong breeze, a considerable swell developed yesterday at unsheltered beaches and at Strandon and Fitzroy a number of bathers got into difficulties in a rip, which in such conditions exists there.
None of those rescued was in a serious condition, but only the prompt and efficient action of members of the lifesaving clubs prevented tragedy,
