EIGHTH RACE SAILED

WIN FOR CHRISTCHURCH

AUCKLAND, This Day,

The eighth race in the contest for the Corn-well Cup was sailed this morning ofT'Bayswater in a light northerly breeze. The Christchurch crew, T. Bassett and C. Papps, won by 3min 3 sec from Ota'go, with Wellington third. The race started at 9.45, Wellington get-ting-the best of a good start, followed by Paremata, Auckland, Otago, Christchurch, Kaiapoi, Manukau, Lyttelton, Plimmerton, and Tauranga, all close together. The course was two rounds of a triangle from the club house, round a mark at the head of Shoal Bay, round a mark off Northcote Point, and back about six miles on the first leg.'

Paremata was in the lead, followed by Lyttelton, Tauranga, Manukau, Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland, Otago, Plimmerton, and Paremata, and held the lead on the run to the lee mark. All were carrying spinnakers to pore. The Paremata crew rounded first, followed by Lyttelton, Tauranga, Christchurch, Manukau, Wellington, and Auckland. On the beat to the. mark at the club house the wind was light and variable. Wellington did well on this leg and passed them all, Christchurch being close up. On the first run the times were:—Wellington, lOh 38m 475; Christchurch, lOh 39m; Lyttelton, lOh 40m 28s; Tauranga, lOn 40m 355; Manukau, lOh 40m 565; Auckland, lOh 42m 16s; Otago, lOh 42m 255; Paremata lOh 42m 50s. The other boats were a long way behind.

The Christchurch crew turned at the !op mark with a lead of 2min 30scc from Otago, with Auckland lmin and Tauranga 2min later. On the run to the mark at Northcote, Christchurch drew further away from Otago, which was some distance ahead of Auckland, followed by Tauranga, Lyttelton, and Wellington. On the beat back to the finishing line Christchurch sailed a good course up the middle of the bay and maintained the lead. The finishing times were:—Christchurch, llh 42rn 22s 1- Otago, llh 45m 255, 2; Wellington, llh 47m 21s, 3; Lyttelton, llh 48m, 4; Auckland, llh 48m ss, 5; Tauranga, llh 48m 7s, 6; Manukau, lib 48m 14s, 7; Paremata, llh 51m 20s, 8; Plimmerton, llh 52m Bs, 9. The wins to date are as follows:— Christchurch, Plimmerton, and Auckland, two each; Manukau and Kaiapoi, one each. The contest proceeds until one crew wins three races.
