LANGUAGES MASTER

The appointment of Dr. R. A. Lochore, M.A., Ph.D., as languages master at Scots College has been announced. Dr. Lochore, who was born at Stratford, has had a distinguished scholastic career, and from 1930 to 1934 studied on the Continent. After obtaining his B.A. degree at the Auckland University in 1923 he was appointed relieving assistant in French to Professor Maxwell Walker. He then joined the staff of the Mount Albert Grammar School, and later attended Victoria University College, where in 1926, he took his M.A. degree with first-class honours in French In 1927 he joined the staff of Banks College, and in 1930 left for Germany where he studied at the Foreigners' Institute, Berlin, and at the Berlin University, He also studied at the Institute for International Education at Mainz, and at Bonn University where he was awarded the Ph.D. degree. During the time he was on the Continent, Dr. Lochore travelled extensively in France, England, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, Austria, and Italy. Since returning to New Zealand he has been working on a book to be entitled "Austral Humanism, a Formulation of New Zealand's Cultural Problems," the publication of which has been guaranteed by the New Zealand Council for Educational Research.
