BUNYAN AND DEFOE

There are many visitors to London, as well as Londoners themselves, who have never seen the last resting place of the authors of "Robinson Crusoe" and "The Pilgrim's Progress." Yet this spot is in the midst of busy London and easily accessible. Comparatively few people know of the existence of Bunhill Fields Cemetery, which was called by Southey*"the Campo Santo of Dissenters." It has a frontage in City Road, within a short distance of the boundary of the City of London, and extends back to the parallel thoroughfare of Bunhill Row. Among the celebrated people who were laid to rest in that plot of ground were Daniel Defoe and John Bunyan. Over the grave of Defoe is a small monument erected by subscriptions from boys and girls. It was on the island of Juan Fernandez that Alexander Selkirk was cast, and it was on his adventures that Defoe founded his book.. The grave of John Bunyan has a monument erected at the expense of the Earl of Shaftesbury, who was. such a notable figure by reason of his philanthropy.
