STREET NOISES
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—The letter by "Motorist" and your article on "Phon Offences," both in the issue ot January 15, should earn the attention and the gratitude of all except those who have cast-iron nerves. These new motof boras are an annoyance, and why tht City Council has allowed them is beyond the comprehension of most people. Might I point out to "Motorist" and others that there is a very close connection between the speeding of motor vehicles and the awful noises which assail our nerves in the city of Wellington. The motorist, whether he be the driver of a private, car or a taxi, is desperately anxious to get to his destination in the minimum of time; consequently he speeds—this leads to accidents and to avoid this the motorist, instead of reducing speed, merely increases, the phon power of his motor horn. In all discussions of this sort it is of little use unless one is prepared to suggest a remedy. I will repeat what I have said before, namely, that 20 miles per hour should be the limit through cities and boroughs, and, further than that, I consider the president of the Automobile Association was ill advised to suggest that such a. speed through our cities was conducive to accidents. On the contrary, it is conducive to safety and to reasonable conditions of life to have moderate speeds and as quiet a city as possible. It is to Tbe hoped that the Minister in charge of these matters will turn out to be as good a friend to the people as Mr. Hore-Belisha is proving to be to the folks in England.—l am, etc., ' REASON IN ALL THINGS.
