TRIANGULAR CONTEST

MASTERTON WIN BANNER

COMFORTABLE MARGIN

| Beginning well by scoring decisively in the 100 yards sprint and thereafter maintaining a strong hand, the Masterton Club had no difficulty in coming out on top and retaining the banner in the triangular contest with the Petone and Olympic Clubs at a sports meeting held on the Petone Recreation Ground on Saturday afternoon. Masterton's total of points was 101; Petone scored 68 and Olympic 19. There were two or three strong counter-attractions and the attendance was not as large as is usually seen at the Petone ground. Between five and six hundred were present. _ A strong, gusty south-westerly wind troubled the competitors; in fact, so strong was the wind at times that in some of the events it probably took greater toll on the competitors than the race itself. With conditions as they were, it was hardly to be expected that there would be any outstanding performances. And there were not, nor did all the events produce the keenest of competition, but there were others, notably a half-mile and a quarter-mile, in which W. Ogg (Olympic) and C. Wyeth (Masterton) had a great struggle for first place, and the three miles cycle handicap which were splendid contests. Wyeth pushed Ogg hard, the Wellington halfmile champion winning narrowly on each occasion. Len Sowerby won the three miles cycle handicap by two lengths from C. Biggs and K. Wilson. He was also second in the final of the one mile cycle handicap, and his brother, Les Sowerby, was first in the final of the half-mile cycle handicap. Apart from Wyeth, there were several other good runners in the Masterton Club's team, C. Hausman, G. Crothers, J. Eastwood, and Miss A. Gibbs (the holder of the Wellington provincial women's sprint title) being consistent performers. In the pole vault event two Masterton representatives, C. Curtis and W. H. Roberts, shared first place, each clearing the bar at 10ft 3in. A SURPRISE WITHDRAWAL. The Wellington mile champion, A. H. Wilson, started in the one mile handicap, but retired after having completed two laps. There were only three other runners in the race, and when he dropped out Wilson had almost caught them and a win seemed well within his capabilities. M. S. Fleming, of the Melbourne Harrier Club, who is on a visit to the Dominion, was the winner from the 25 yards mark. A. -Mackay, who ran most of the way with a shoe lace which had come undone flapping round his ankles, was second, some forty or fifty yards behind Fleming. The meeting opened with a parade of the competitors, after which the visiting athletes were welcomed by Mr. J. Kerr, president of the Petone Club, and Mr. A. C. Kitto, president of the Wellington Centre. Among others present were members of the N.Z.A.A.A. Council and the Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Nash), who is often a spectator at Petone sports meetings. Besides leading the parade of athletes, the Hutt Municipal Band (Mr. A. Bancroft drum-major and Mr. A. Kay conductor) played enjoyable selections during the afternoon.
