COOL TEMPERATURES

Special forecast for Wellington:— Fresh north-westerly winds, changing to southerlies and later increasing. Weather fair to fine at first, but showers probable following the southerly change. Temperatures cool.

The general forecast is for northwesterly winds north of New Plymouth and Napier, backing later to southwest; elsewhere south-westerlies prevailing, force moderate to strong generally. Unsettled weather is to be expected in the north-eastern portion of the North Island, with some further rain. Elsewhere cool and changeable conditions are likely, with passing showers at many places. An improvement is likely tomorrow. There were north-westerly gales yesterday at many places as a deep westerly depression moved on to the Dominion. This morning the depression had already crossed the South Island, where southerly winds prevail. Northerlies still ruled over the North Island and in parts of the north-east, where they were of gale force. Generally, however, they had moderated. Yesterday the weather was warm and sultry, but cooler conditions now prevail from Wellington southwards. There have been widespread rains, with some heavy falls in districts with a westerly aspect. Wanganui reports 1.30 in, Foxton l.lßin, Greymouth 1.31 in, and Arthur's Pass 3,46 in. . At Auckland the weather became fair yesterday afternoon, but early this mewing there was further light ram. A moderate to fresh north-westerly wind prevailed. . ~ After a brief interval of fair weatner between 11.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m., rain commenced to fall at Wellington. After 10 p.m. it was very heavy for a time. Shortly after 6 a.m. today it ceased. The total fall was .75in at Kelburn and l.__n at Lower Hutt. A northerly gale prevailed yesterday, but it gradually died down, and late this morning there were indications of the approach of a southerly change. There were 3.2 hours of sunshine yesterday. Temperatures have fallen slightly. . Christchurch experienced a boisterous north-westerly wind yesterday, but this morning it had changed to a moderate south-westerly. Though there were brief and light showers in the afternoon the weather for the most part was fair and sultry. This morning at 9 o'clock the weather was fine and cooler Fine and bright weather prevailed at Dunedin, with a strong northerly, wind. Early this morning the wind changed to a strom? south-westerly, and there was some rain.
