VIEWED WITH CONCERN
CHAIN STORE SYSTEM
"MENACE TO RETAILERS"
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
WHANGAREI, January 17.
The first step in what the promoters hope will become a Dominion-wide movement for combating the growth of the chain store system was- taken in Whangarei, when a representative meeting of business people and several professional men passed a motion
"viewing' with concern the continued growth of chain and multiple stores throughout the Dominion and the menace they create to the wellbeing of i large body of retailers with whom they come into unfair trading competition to the detriment in the final result of the taxpayers as a whole. Price cutting, inequitable competition, and cheap labour combine to create monopolies in the hands of powerfulvorganisations, to the ruin and elimination of the legitimate single trader, whose stability in the past has in so largo a measure contributed to the strength and prosperity of the country."
The resolution is to be forwarded to the Prime Minister.
The co-operation of wholesalers, retailers, and assistants throughout th. Dominion is to be sought.
