SENATE'S WORK
CONDUCTING EXAMINATIONS
(Special to the "Evening Post")
AUCKLAND, January 17,
The vast amount of examination work annually undertaken by the Senate of the University of.New Zealand was briefly referred to by the Chancellor, the Hon. J. A. Hanan, in the course of his address this morning to the annual meeting of the body. Candidates for matriculation (entrance) examination in 1935 totalled 5063; 37 more completed the accountants' preliminary, bringing the total up to 5100. In addition there were the examinations in arts, science, education, social science, journalism, accountancy, commerce, 'banking/ shipping, insurance, law, home science, surveying, agriculture, forestry,* engineering, medicine, dental surgery, music, and public health. There was also the Senate's responsibility for the \ appointment of examiners and of supervisors, the printing ', of examination papers, the drawing up of time-tables,, making arrangements ,- for places for holding the examinations, considering and recording reports of examiners, declaring examination results, the issuing of certificates, diplomas, etc. .'..'..-
Dejgrees conferred in 1935 totalled 668, compared with 393 ten years ago. Undergraduates' in all colleges numbered 3204 in 1935, compared. With 3008 iri 1925. This,, relatively small in- . crease, Mr.: Hanan suggested,: might be due to the discontinuance of university bursaries and- to the closing of some of the training colleges. The new School Certificate examination," he said, "which provides for a wider range of subjects .than the University Entrance Examination, should remove to some extent the complaint made that the educational work of the high schools was dominated by the examinations prescribed, by the University. The success attending this reform will depend in a measure upon the value put upon the certificate as a criterion of. general scholastic attainment"' ■ .' •
