CENTRE CHAMPIONSHIPS
The allocations of the; various cc»» tre championships have'now been mada and the clubs responsible for -the c«in» ducting of them.will have certain attractive, items for their carnivals. .Ths first carnival of the season is to'be held by the Hutt Club next month, and the decision of the junior .and inter* mediate championshipsl wlU;occupy,M •proiiiinent place "oA '.the programme L as .well as the men^s diving .champion* ship. ~ The younger prospective candidates for the team to represent thq centre at Hamilton: will gefr their opportunity of showing their-ability, and the calibre, of the performances "wrill no doubt .determine the composition of, the. team..' Last season representation ■ from" the- local centre was srflkll. Miss :Olga Smith and D. O'Neill being the two competitors. It would be advisable if %n Effort were mjade: ihr the direction; of, incrjeasing the'iyiniber this year, not'only 'as.an.encouragement- to the, younger'^wimihersi but* with>.a View to showing the pther. omtres that the sport;is not altogether ;d^funct": as to- juniors and intermediates::. It --is admitted that i there are rid youfig swimmers-right,in,line with the best the Dominion can produce, But at the same time there is. some: promising material quite capable of making- a good showing. The experience so gained would be valuable, and an inducement to the youngsters to make every effort towards ■ improvement. The Wairarapa clubs cater- extensively; for their junior and intermediate swimmers and the progress made with them' during the last two seasons has been praiseworthy. : There is sure .to be 1 a good contingent competing at the Hutt again this month, and pitted, against the best of the town clubs, the competition should provide the material for a larger team to represent the centre than has been the case for several years, provided, of course, that,-the selector is '.-not .restricted as to - th« numbers.- -V'.';:-v/ -'■;■'."v-^ :
