EASY MAIDEN VICTOR

vBLACK THREAD'S PROMISE

Black Thread, a short-priced favourite, as completely outclassed the field for the Maiden Plate as the betting and his recent unlucky performance at Feilding indicated he would. He drew out clear immediately the tapes were released, and he was always showing his heels to the others, romping in a two lengths' winner without ever having a challenge to meet. It was only the fourth start that Black Thread has had, and he should have won at Feilding. He is a three-year-old black gelding by Mimetic (a " son =of Comedy King) from the Eng-lish-bred Henry the First mare Shpstitch, the dam also of Threadneedle, ■who was a high-class young horse in his brief race career and who has since done well with His few opportunities t at the stud. He is being raced by Mr. D J. Barry, who also raced Threadneedle, and who received him as a gift from his breeder, Mr. H. D. de Latour. W. Goscomb trains him at Gisborne, but he has been at Awapuni for over a jnonth. He looks one of the most promising horses to leave maiden ranks for some time in this district. Cloudy Bay, at a much better price for second than the winner paid, was always fairly handy in the running and she came home well to beat Dungarvan by a head for her placing. She was quite unable, however, to make any impression on the winner. This LapiSary mare has been unlucky not to have left maiden ranks yet. and her turn may come during the holidays. Dungarvan, "having his first start, ran a fine race, being second all the way till just on the post. He is a three-year-old son of Colossus and he carries the same colours as Full Throttle, who also made a similarly promising debut at Awapuni some years ago. Barley Almond, after being off the track all the way from the outside marble, was finishing on fourth, and Battle Pomp, who also traversed a lot of ground on the turn, was fifth. Entheos, a loosely made, three-year-old who may be better later on, failed to maintain his position on the inner, and Conversion, out of range at the straight, was not ridden out, finishing last.; Trimden and Merry Night made up some leeway over the closing section. ■ ; > •
