FAVOURITES WELL BEATEN
Passion Fruit, at a useful price, assisted in concluding the day on the wrong note for bettors, for he was fourth favourite' in the Grandstand Handicap, which he won decisively. He thus completed a double for Mr. O. Nelson, who also owned the Cup winner Hunting Cat. Passion Fruit was one of the first away, but he soon retired from the role of leadership and was last before the field left the' straight. There he remained till near the three furlongs, when he passed Glenvane, but so strongly did he come round the home turn that he was already second to Pladie as they straightened up for the judge. He swept to the front at the distance, and although Alby challenged along the fence he was not troubled to go on and score by a length and. a half. It was Passion Fruit's first success for some time, but he is a horse troubled with unsoundriess. It has been reported that if he1 gives more trouble in this respect he may not be persevered with much longer. Alby, third behind Princess Dorecn and Pladie to the straight, went a good race without being a match for the winner. Glenvane ran on at the end
for third placing a little over half a length back. Pladie weakened into a moderate fourth. Princess Doreen was yielding before they reached the straight, a distance apparently being beyond her, though the race may improve her. Golden Hair, a big favourite, was a complete disappointment. Once again she was wayward before the start, but the field was quickly dispatched. *
