ASHBURTON MEETING

THE CHAMPION STAKES

Frisco lady the winner

(Special to the "Evenino Post.") ■ CHRISTCHURCH, December 26. : The Ashburton Trotting Club held its Summer Meeting in hot weather and with a large attendance. It was a success in every way, large fields providing interesting sport, while in spite of the time lost in two presentations, the machine closed for the -last race only a quarter of an hour after schedule. This was a notable effort, on which the club's executive and tiie totalisator proprietor could be congratulated, especially as the machine was operating on the win and place system. The investments were £ 21,751 against £17,203 last year. * The racing opened with the Mitcham Handicap. Bonnie Here was soon in charge/with Cracksman, Bon Chance, Royal' Romance, and Royal Parrish following. Bonnie Rere retired half a mile from home. Royal Romance joined Cracksman in the lead a furlong from the post but broke and Cracksman beat him by four lengths. Bon Chance was three lengths away, with Royal Parrish close up, then Win Thru and Master Wrack. The winner, with no previous form, trotted a solid race. The nineteen starters for the Wakanui Handicap all went off the limit. Colleen Wrack was in front after two furlongs, and Aide de Camp, Our War,. Ace Pot, and Zest followed her past ;the mile-post, while at the home turn Blair Athol also joined in. Colleen ■ ; Wrack then retired. Our War led to ■the straight but Blair Athol soon headed him and won easily by four lengths ■ from Zest, who beat Ace Pot by-' three ■lengths. Our War tired into fourth place. Blair Athol,, a three-year-old to Silver de Oro, looks like making a good horse. His time, 3min 19sec, was a record for a maiden 1 horse.1 : : . ■ <: ROI L'OR'S CUP VICTORY. : The Ashburton Trotting Cup was a -fine race all the way. Sir Guy broke at the start, but the others went off well. Sunny Morn was in charge after ■Vtwo furlongs but two furlongs further on Blue Mountain took the lead, with Evicus and Sunny Morn handy and the others close up. There was no change till the straight was reached, when'Roi lOr joined the leaders. Blue Mountain tired in the last furlong and in an exciting finish Roi lOr beat •Evicus by half a length. Wrecker finished resolutely to cut Blue Mountain out of third place. Sunny Morn •was close up fifth. The performance of. Roi TOr, from the back mark, was , a good one, and he came in for a great reception. ... FRISCO LAD Y'SSUCCESS. - The New Zealand Champion Stakes , drew a field of nine: and the winning performance of , Frisco Lady left no ' doubt about her being a three-year-old of the best class. Ping broke at the start and Casanova followed suit after a hundred yards. Double Great was the early leader but Pot Luck joined him after two furlongs, Frisco Lady and Maltravers being next, while a little further on Casanova and Gaillard were handy. Pot Luck led Frisco i Lady to the straight, but the latter 1 took charge a furlong from the post 1 and won easily by , three lengths. Double Great stuck on in third place, beating iGaillard by a length, with Casanova next.. No excuses could be made for the beaten horses. .. A PACER FROM The Midsummer Handicap was spoilt to some extent by an accident, a little more than a furlong after the start Gallant Knight was in front at this stage, followed by Cream Harvester, who blundered and fell, Wheat Pool, Plutus, Sky Wink, and Oversight being ■ brought down, while Harlequin and Loretta suffered serious interference. When they settled down Gallant Knight was well clear. Shadow Queen took second place at the mile post, with Trireme third, but Lady Hannah, was third half a mile from home. There was no further change and Gallant Knight won, easing up, by two lengths from Shadow Queen, J who beat Lady Hannah by three lengths. Trireme, Vanity Fair, and Civic were next The winner is an American stallion who has now won two races in two starts in the Dominion. He looks a class pacer.:: \> ' > ; ' i Flotsam and Sandy N. were smartest out in the Winslow Handicap, ■ but Flotsam broke after a furlong, where Guy o' Mine and Raclaim went on from Sandy N., Don Chenault, and Stand By. There was no change to the home turn, where Bessie Parrish also joined in. There was not much between Sandy , N., Teviot Downs, and Bessie Parrish a hundred yards from the post, and Teviot Downs, getting up on the post beat Sandy N. by a head, with Bessie Parrish a length away. Flotsam was a poor fourth. Teviot'Downs has not come on as was hoped, but on this occasion he trotted a solid race. Sell was soon in front in the McLean Handicap, but Jean Drusus headed, him. After two furlongs Bay Flier ran past them and Silver Axworthy was in fourth place. Wee Wrack moved up fast at the mile post and a furlong further on she was second, where she remained to the home turn, but then retired. Self took the lead less than a furlong from the post and beat Bay Flier by two lengths. Jean Drusus was three lengths away, with Silver Axworthy, Mystery Yet and Grand Author close up. The winner, a five-year-old by Jack Potts, is gradually coming on to improved form.= Bay Flier paced a solid.race ana just.failed at the end. Mocast arid Aristotle went to the front in the Boxing Day Handicap with Ciro, Major Lind, Llewellyn's Pride, Recess, Prairie King, and Golden Direct handy. Reporter joined in .five furlongs from home. Llewellyn's Pride took charge in the straight and ■ stalled Off Recess to win easily by a length. Supertax finished fast three lengths away, with Ciro, Little Nelson, Cloudy Range, Guy Junior, and Prairie King close up. Llewellyn's Pride, a half-brother to Silver de Oro and Blair Athol, is developing into a good class performer. ", \ RESULTS IN DETAIL. Results are:— ■ . -..
