THREE NOTABLE DEFEATS

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI, December 26. Good progress was made today with the North island tennis championship tournament, which was continued in glorious weather. There were three notable eliminations. J. J. McCartny (.Wellington) was beaten by, M. L. Lampe (.Wanganui) in the third round of the men's singles: Mrs. C. Smith (Wanganuij- lost to Miss T. Greaves (Wanganui) in the ladies' singles, and Bedford .(Wellington) and McFarlanej (Wanganui) were elminated by the redoubtable Wanganui pair Cox and Udy in the men's doubles. At the moment it looks as though the final of the men's singles will be fought out between those two well-known players N. G. Sturf (Auckland) and Bedford (Wellington).
