PROFESSOR'S POVERTY
Professor Hugh McNeill, formerly a professor of classics in the National University of Ireland, died in the Dublin Poor Law Institution: Professor McNeill, who was 69, and father of Major-General Hugh McNeill, Assistant Chief of Staff of the Free State Army, had been in failing health for the past five years. A member of a distinguished County Antrim family. Professor McNeill was a brother of Mr. James McNeill, the former Gover-nor-General of the Irish Free - State! and of Professor John McNeill, a former Free State Minister of Education. Frequently Professor McNeill received cheques from his brothers and sons, but always strongly and very definitely declined to accept any financial help. "On one occasion," stated a friend, "lie tore up a four-figure cheque from a relative in my presence." Once a well-known Rugby footballer, Professor McNeill was one of the greatest exponents of chess in Ireland and was a linguist of the highest order.
