TODAY AT MIRAMAR

WELLINGTON CHAMPIONSHIPS

The second day's play in the Wellington, lawn tennis championships and handicap events began at Miramar tennis courts today in warm and windy weather. D. G. France gained a rapid victory over Gallagher in the men's singles, playing a steady baseline game and proving so steady on the backhand that his opponent's concentration on that wing proved of little use. D. B. Livingstone was missing overhead when he and Miss Dale (Tauranga) met Ferkins and Miss -J. Small in the second round of the mixed doubles. The forceful play of Ferkins captured the first set but in the second Livingstone and Miss Dale led 5-4 and held three set points. The chance was missed, and Ferkins and his partner by good team work took the set after 6-all. K. Dyer played with steadiness against E. A. Roussell, but the latter's better placements told after.a shaky opening. It looked as if Dyer might get a good lead in the first set, as his defence was remarkable and Roussell was missing at the end of long rallies. But it.was.Roussell's extra bit of speed and placement that finally carried him through in two sets.' Miss J. Douthett, the Hutt Valley junior, gained a good win over Miss M. Macassey, leading 4-0 in both' sets and holding off Miss Macassey's counteroffensive after it had- taken three successive games in the first set. Miss Dou,thett was driving very confidently and scored outright winners' with a Cross-court forehand, covering her backhand well against her opponent's attack. Miss Macassey's net attack was countered by fine retrieving by the young Hutt Valley player, who shaped very confidently in the difficult conditions. Miss Z. Castle scored a meritorious win over Miss Whisker after losing the first set 1-6. It was a long match in which superior fitness told after Miss Whisker had held two match points. ■■■■; N. Smith, the present singles champion, opened strongly in his match with D. C. Coombe. He took the first set 6-0, beating Coombe by good ground strokes which baffled that player. Smith's speed forced Coombe to weak returns. In the second set Coombes had settled down and by a sound net attack he moved into a 4-0 lead and won the set 6-1. . Coombe continued his winning streak in the third set. He led 5-2 and, presenting a wonderful defence against Smith's driving,; clinched the.- set 6-2 and the match there and then. Miss J. Douthett followed up hjn earlier success by taking the first set from Miss M. Howe 64. She. led 5-2 and had several" set points, but strong hitting by Miss Howe saved this game and the next. . The. well-controlled, more discriminating hitting of the Hutt Valley player turned the scale in the tenth game, even- though she was facing the wind. ■>~■.-.■ Miss Douthett was ahead at 4-3.in the next set, but Miss Howe won her service to even the games score,-and then took the next two games and the set. Maintaining a strong: attack on his opponent's backhand, D. G. France took the first set fromJ. C. Charters, 6-3. Results are:—- , 4 CHAMPIONSHIPS. "'''" A tirade! Men's Singles. Second round.—D.' G.
