PRIZES PRESENTED

SUCCESSFUL YEAR

MARSDEN SCHOOL

The annual prize-giving ceremony of 'Marsden School was held yesterday afternoon and was largely attended by parents and friends. The Bishop of Wellington (Dr. T. H. Sprott), who was accompanied by Mrs. Sprott, presided. There were also present the Minister; of Education (the Hon. P. Fraser), Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P., and members of the " board of governors. "Once again we have come to the end of. our school year; once again comes the time when we have to say 'good-bye' to girls who have been with us for many years, and who are now 'passing beyond the sheltered life of school," said the headmistress (Miss G. E, Mayhew),. in her address. "They cflrry with them, our best wishes for •; -their future happiness, and, a feeling 'of quiet confidence that they will never •give us cause to be anything but proud to claim them as 'old girls.' We think 'today both of the past and the future. Do you realise our school is 57 years old? Much, older than most other schools of its type in New Zealand; even older than many of the wellknown English schools? We have inherited much from the past; we are endeavouring to hand on much also to, the ■ school of the future. I was -'interested by a remark of a visitor to the school recently,. who said: 'One felt the beautiful orderliness of o the school at work.' Orderliness may sound a dull virtue/but is it not one that, in a school, . may lead to a feeling of security and prepare the way for .bigger things? Does it not create an atmosphere of work and a realisation of the rights of others in a community? The feeling that we are all here for a definite purpose has prevaded the classrooms, and I am convinced that it is a valuable asset in our school life. "Although, of course, I refer to them, ' 1 do not emphasise in my report our successes, nor tell you many of our .activities. Most Of you know them already; but, in any case, that which appealsto me. most is the quiet daily work, the gradual development of mtod and character, and the efforts to give our girls an outlook which may do . something, in the future towards keeping the puzzled nations of this world at peace." Mayhew expressed appreciation of the great interest Bishop and Mrs.' Sprott had always taken1 in the school. "Oh this, their last official visit to Marsden, I should, like to expres both to the Bishop and Mrs. Sprott, hot only the gratitude of the school, but my own personal thanks for the unfailing help I have received in the carrying. out of my duties," she said. , Reference to the. work of Bishop Sprott as chairman of the board of governors was made by Mr. Henderson, a member, of the board, who conveyec . to Bishop and Mrs. Sprott best wishes for the future. " ...-■.. Appreciation of the reference made about himself and Mrs: Sprott was expressed by Bishop Sprott, who congratulated Miss Mayhew and her staff on the success achieved by the school. The present was his last official act in connection with Marsden School, but he was saying good-bye to the school in an official .capacity only. _ Th! e, prizes were' presented by Mrs. Sprott. . ; ."
