FRENCH BEANS

TREATMENT IN HOT WEATHER

During the hot weather French beans will derive immense benefit from' frequent waterings or hosings during the evenings. This practice tends to'prevent attacks by red spider. Keep the soil lightly hoed to prevent caking, and follow this with a mulching of well-rotted' manure. If the plants show signs of going yellow, and it is found that red spider is on the leaves, spray the plants with lime-sulphuil spray in the proportion of one part in fifty of water.

If the plants show signs of going yellow all over, and of 'rotting off at the ground level, pull them out and burn them. Then dig over the bed in which they were, and give it a good liming, or water it with sulphate of iron, Bordeaux mixture, or Chishunt compound, as there is a soil fungus present.

The same treatment applies equally to butter beans and runners. With ail

varieties of beans keep the pods regularly picked and the plants will continue to produce flowers and pods over a considerable period.
