LONDON, November 30,
On December 12 the Royal Empire Society wall hold its annual New Zealand reception and ball at the Leathersellers' Hall. The guests will be received by Sir James Parr and Sir Archibald and Lady Weigall.
Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Ward have taken a house at Ferndown, Dorset, until the spring, when they hope to go to Austria or Switzerland for skiing, and then make a general tour of the Continent prior to an English summer. Since arriving in England last April, Mr. and Mrs. Ward have been in Scotland, and. they have been paying a round of visits to friends.
Mr. and Mrs. James P. Hannah (Wellington) , who have "been spending some time in Scotland with relatives, have gone south for the winter. They spent a few days in London to visit the exhibition of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters at Prince's Gallery, in Piccadilly, where their portraits/ are being exhibited. John Revel, R.P.;: aprominent English painter and at one .time director of the Chelsea and Glasgow" Art Schools, .has achieved distinctive portraits of his young sitters, who were painted during the summer in Cornwall. Mrs. Hannah will be remembered as Miss Nola Pederson (Wellington).
The English branch of the Auckland Diocesan High ■ pid Girls' League had another Very, happy re-, union at Church House,' Westminster. At the "Founders' Day" service;the Rev, G. R. Barnett gave a snort address. Miss Emily King presided at the business meeting. It was proposed by Mrs. Burmester, seconded by Miss Mary Grant, and carried: "That the English branch of the O.G. League strongly advocate no restrictions whatsoever to membership of the league, and that any girl who has been admitted as a pupil to the Diocesan High School should be eligible to become a member." Miss Mary Grant gave an interesting talk. on her visit to New Zealand. A warm welcome was accorded to Mrs. Neligan and Miss Eva Necker. Miss Margaret Bowen, headmistress of Queen Mary's School, Helmsley, Yorkshire, was not able to come to London.
Mrs. tfenwick (Dunedin), who has been at Windsor for six months, has come to London to live.
Miss Margaret Kember (Wellington) has been visiting Sir Thomas and Lady Wilford at Northwood. She has taken a flat at Richmond with Mrs. SavilL
Mrs. and Miss Barrer (Masterton) have taken the opportunity, during the season, of being present at a number of interesting meetings in London and elsewhere. They attended the annual meeting of the Associated Countrywomen of the World, and were present at the peace rally in the Royal Albert Hall, at which the results of the peace ballot were announced. Shortly after that they were at the meeting at Trafalgar Square at which Miss Maud Royden and Mr. Beverley Nichols, and other well-known speakers addressad the gathering. Miss Barrer attended the meeting of the Institute of International Relations, held recently at Geneva, and for a fortnight in early spring she toured Switzerland with a good-will party, visiting Interlaken, Berne, and Lucerne. They had an interesting time at Istanbul, Turkey, at the first international meeting of women. Mrs. Barrer.is on her way to New Zealand, but her daughter is remaining in London for the present. '
