MARATHON RACE
TO BE ,HELD IN FEBRUARY;
Permission having been, by. the Wellington. Centre for the 'holding of a marathon race in conjunction with the Wellington provincial track -arid field championships on February 15, the harrier sub-committee this week decided upon the course, which is to be from the Basin Reserve to Taita and back. Entries are to close on. February 1. As a preliminary to this 26-odd miles jaunt, a ten miles road race is to be held by the harrier sub-committee on January 20, either at the Hutt or in Wellington. For some time past, in Wellington, at any rate, considerable interest has been shown in the direction of holding a marathon as,, an. annual event with the ultimate-object of it being recognised as a New Zealand championship. A representative entry is expected, and the event, if he is able to make the trip, should prove a. good try-out for J. W. Savidan, of Auckland, who has stated more than once.since the return of the New Zealand harrier team from Australia that.it is lys intention to concentrate on the marathon with a view to selection as a New Zealand representative at the Olympic Games in Berlin in.August next. It is reported that the race is likely to attract a number of Wellington runners, and it is hoped that the field will also include representatives from other centres as well.
