GENERAL NOTES
The ; Governor-General, Lord Galway, has accepted the office of patron of the New Zealand Surf Life-saving Asssociation. Though late in starting, last Saturday's carnival at Island Bay provided a very ; successful opening function for the competitive season. It speaks well for the teams concerned that only four points separated, the first and last teams in the Island Bay Shield competition. It is to be hoped, however, that Island Bay beach is in better condi-. tion for the Wellington provincial championship, for which a large crowd can be expected. The crowded condition of the beach last Saturday was the subject of comment by several officials. With several hundred spectators present, and teams from all Wellington and some outside clubs competing, the congestion will undoubtedly be a lot greater at the cham-: pionship. < Lyall Bay are to be congratulated on possessing what is probably, the strongest swimming team in the history of the club; Their performance in the water was .surprising, even I though the team against which, they were swimming was a junior one. When Lyall Bay goes south for the Dominion championships, there should be little concern as to who should draw the water positions. Island Bay gave a very polished exhibition on the land, and their performance . against Maranui B showed that their water work has improved since last season. Indeed, the team was unlucky not to win the shield, as Lyall Bay's display on land was by no means so impressive as it was in "the water. Unsteadiness was noticeable in all teams to a greater or lesser extent, and here was where the Maranui teams lost most points. Their linework, however, was good, but it was apparent that the teams need more training on the beach and in the water. Talking during and after when the patient was being resuscitated cost the Island Bay team valuable points. The brightest event of the day was the canoe rescue race, the success of which should be boi'ne in mind by officials in compiling the programmes of future carnivals. A surf would have added a further spice of adventure to the race, though no doubt it-would have entailed bringing the patients in by the third method. .
