CALCUTTA CUP
CURIOUS HISTORY
% Rugby tro^hifes/jn Britain^ are not many. andyof-these';the widest known is of course the Calcutta Clip. Its history is strange. In.: the seventies a Riigby club was founded"in Calcutta and" occasional games were Splayed at .Bombay and; Madras/, '.C\v V In 1878 the club was disbanded, the funds converted irtto silver rupees, which were melted down, and a cup of native design and workmanship made. The trophy was accepted by the Rugby Football Union of England for annual competition between that country and Scotland. It seems curious that Ireland and Wales have not been permitted to participate in the contest, though of course they engage in international matches .^vittiihe-above .countries.
