RETROSPECTIVE PAYMENT

It is the intention of the Government to make a retrospective payment of £2800 to 4450 men engaged on temporary relief work on public works for the Labour Day holiday. In making the announcement today, the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) said he thought no discrimination should be made for payment of work done on Labour Day between permanent men and those temporarily engaged. He also indicated that in future he intended to withdraw the discrimination between Maoris and pakehas engaged on public works. Mr. Semple also announced that in future married men on public works would not be charged the tent rental of 4s 6d a week which had been charged in the past. i
