THE WAIPA MEETING

PRELUDE FOR ELLERSLIE

(By Tolcnrapli.) (Special from "Early Bird.")

AUCKLAND, This Day. . The final meeting in the north prior to the big midsummer carnival at Ellei-slie.is that at Te Awamutu tomorrow, when the annual fixture of the Waipa Racing Club will be held. The going will be fast. Betting will be conducted on the win-dnd-place system. It will not be a big field that contests the Te Awamutu Cup, but it is anticipated that the nine acceptors will go to the post. Three of these, King Rey, Gay Broney, and Gay Rose, are in the Auckland Cup, and so their efforts tomorrow will be of general interest. King Rey has a solid weight to carry on this turning track, but he nevertheless must be given an excellent chance, as a solid pace is unlikely. Lack of pace would also suit Gay Broney, who is back to his best form. Gay Rose is very likely with her light weight, and she may be the means of upsetting calculations. Gay Marigold is still in and is to run, though she has been taken out of the 'Auckland Cup. Mazir ran two excellent races in the plate classes at Takapuna, and he may bother some of the more heavilyweighted ones. ; ■'• ■ The class, in the open sprint, the Flying Handicap, is very poor outside of the topweight, Galilee, and good judges will be surprised if the filly fails on this, her home track. Sweet Lap seems to be nicely placed in the opening event, the Hurdles, for she displayed distinct promise at both Te Rapa and Ellerslie recently. History may repeat itself in the Paterangi Handicap, which Psychologist won twelve months ago, with 7.13, this being his last success. Now he has 7.0, and as he finished strongly at Avondale last Saturday he may add another event to his record. However, Maine is improving and may prove a stumbling block. . j Form jri hack cups and hack "classics" is generally very reliable, or it has proved to be so in the north; and therefore one could: select Light Comedy as being a strong possibility, in,'the Hack . Cup tomorrow.: This filly finished right on the heels of Tray. Bit, Mazir, and Royal Dance in the'Takapuna Plate, and the form was proved correct oa. the-second .day of that meeting, the filly- not starting; She should be suited by the course with her speed, and :this time she will be ridden by a' strong horseman u> stead of the. stable apprentice who was; in the -saddle' when - she won at', Te Rapa. Wahine .Reihi is also engaged in the Hack; Cup; but.it is understood that she is to'-start in the sprint. The three-year-old Tonnerre, con-i sidered likely to rise to classic heights: in the spring, will make his reappear-; ance in the Kihikihi Hack Handicap,, and as the class is anything except strong his chances must be considered particularly bright. He, hung out badly in the Champion Hack at Avondale nearly three months ago, and: ■\vhile the Te Awamutu track is also-right-banded*the fact that he, is trained; there indicates thafc.he may be a good proposition tomorrow. Form horses engaged are the following:— •"- •"■ - ..' ... '. : ■ •■.■■.'• : Park Hurdles. —Sweet Lap, Sandy Dix, and Prince of Orange. Kihikihi Hack.—Tonnerre, Little Artist, and Prince Yen.
