APPEAL LOST

TRANSPORT TO RACES

The Transport Co-ordination Board, in a reserved decision, has held that the No. 6 Licensing Authority was correct in granting a temporary licence to the Bell Bus Company to run buses to the Wellington Racing Club's Spring Meeting at Trentham in October, and accordingly has disallowed the appeal by the New Zealand Railways Board. The appeal was made on the ground that the Railway Department provided a convenient and adequate service. The Transport Co-ordination Board stated that the fact that some persons prefer to travel by road was clearly indicated by the number of licences granted to taxis. It was pointed out by (lie board, that there was no appeal against these licences.

"The Bel) Bus Company has a regular licence entitling it to operate on the road, and is therefore not an interloper seeking to skim the cream of (lie service." continues (lie board's decision. "We think the No. 6 Licensing Authority was right in issuing the licence. If the Railways Board desires it may itself apply for a licence on race days, in which case it must receive preference over other services in accordance with section 27 o£ the Transjjorfc Licensing Act."
