SUPERB DRIVING BATSMAN
Although largely a one-man effort (to the extent of 230 runs out of 411) the M.C.C. innings against an Australian eleven enhances the visiting team's reputation, and adds 'a Hardstaffian glamour lo New Zealand's expectation of seeing sparkling cricket. Homeric baiting always appeals to the spectator* Driving expresses force as cutting poses grace, and it does one good to read that the bowler did not stop Hardstaff's drives. "Shots straight down the wicket" and carpet drives are the prettiest of cricket, and would also be the most profitable and rungetting if pace and placing provided a fair chance of passing the field. When the cablegrams state that Hardstaff's severe chiving "forced the covers into the outfield," the hope is raised that New Zealand crowds will enjoy a kind of. batting that is not seen often enough.
