SIX ACTIVE CRATERS

"BIGGER THAN THAT OF 1929"

The following is r. copy of a report received at- 8.30 p.m. m Saturday from Nukualofa (Tongo) by the DirectorGeneral of the General Post Office (Mr. G. McNamars) in connection with the Niuafou Island eruption:

"Preceded by some 20 earthquake shocks and accompanied by lightning, thunder, and rain, the craters Ahofakatau and Hina at Niuafou broke out at 12.50 a.m. today and the eruption appears to be extending towards Futu and Bctani. The inhabitants of Bctani have left the village.

"So far six craters have formed and lava has reached the sea. Some plantations fringing the old lava Held have been destroyed. Great black smoke clouds cover the southern side of the island.

"There has been no loss of life and no immediate danger is anticipated. The eruption is said to be bigger than that of .1929.

"The line of craters extends for two miles, with lava thrown about 70 feet high."
