WANDERING STOCK

UPPER HUTT DISCUSSION

Some discussion ensued at the meeting of the Upper Hutt Borough Council last evening on various aspects of the question of wandering stock.

. Councillor W. Greig asked .why a letter from Mr. F. W. Driscole, asking for permission to appear before the council to state his case had not been read.

Councillor Greig said that at the last meeting of the council three men were charged with allowing stock to wander. Two men were let off under extenuating circumstances. The Town Clerk said, "What about Mr. Driscole?" The Mayor replied to the effect that as Mr. Driscole had not written in nothing could be done. Mr. Driscole had later seen the Mayor as to why he should be the only one whose charge was not withdrawn, and was allegedly told that he had Councillors Greig, Guthrie, and Keys to thank for that. Mr. Driscole had now written in asking if he could appear before the council that evening. Councillor F. P. Keys spoke similarly.

The Mayor (Mr. A. J. McCurdy) stated that he had told Mr. Driscole nothing of the sort. He had informed Mr. Driscole that he could have access to the minutes.

The Town Clerk (Mr. R. C. Major) said that Mr. Driscole's letter had come in in time. He had referred the matter to the Mayor, who ruled that according to standing orders Mr. Driscole must come before a committee.

On the motion of Councillor Greig, seconded bytheMayor.it was decided that Mr. Driscole should be allowed to come before the next meeting of the council.

Later on, the following notice of motion by the Mayor, "That all resolutions directing prosecutions for offences of stock wandering be rescinded, in future (commencing with cases reported at next meeting) proceedings be taken against all persons whose stock has been reported at large on two- occasions, in the six months immediately prior to the date of any ranger's report," lapsed for want of a seconder.
