CABINET MINISTERS SWORN IN
CEREMONY AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE
MR. SAVAGE ON WAGES RESTORATION
New Zealand's first Labour Ministry took office today. The Prime Minister (the Hon. M. J. Savage) and his eleven colleagues of the new Cabinet waited on his Excellency the Governor-General (Viscount Galway) at Government House this morning and formally took the oaths of office.
Four Government cars conveyed them to Government House, and a small crowd of people cheered them on their way as they left Parliament Buildings. They were away for an hour, and the first function on their return was to toast the Prime Minister at an informal gathering. After that they attended to the various official tasks immediately before them.
In an interview the Prime Minister discussed the question of salary restorations, and the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) gave k brief outline of the new Government's policy in respect of public works.
The first meeting of the new Cabinet will be held this evening and there will be a further sitting tomorrow.
