ST. JOHN AMBULANCE

STOKES VALLEY

Mrs. Cording presided over a large attendance of members and visitors at a meeting of the Stokes Valley Women's Institute held recently. The hall was a picture of brightness and gaiety. Beautiful flowers were in abundance, and ferns, pot plants, fruit, and vegetables were, amply displayed. The cooking section showed special1 ability, in the culinary art.

Arrangements were made for the children's Christmas party, a sub'commiUee being formed with Mesdames Libby and Coby as conveners, assisted by Mesdames Montgomery,' Holloway, and Miss McGregor. It was decided not to enter for the potato competition in the coming year. A member presented the institute' with an appropriate bell, being warmly thanked for her kind thought. A beautifully-worked apron was donated by Mrs. Annear, to be disposed of as a contribution in extra funds towards the party. A vote of thanks was passed to the donor.

The winners of the greatest number of points for- the day were Mrs. Morris (39 points), Ist, and Mrs. Pegg (13 points) 2nd. The silver cup competition for puddings resulted in Mrs. Wylie and Mrs. Andersen being declared equal for the first prize. Mrs. Jensen, in a pleasing speech, said she found it very hard indeed to judge the many entries in a beautiful show, and one and all were to be congratulated on their efforts. Mrs. Cording thanked Mrs. Jensen for coming so far and for taking so keen an interest in the institute's .welfare, and asked her to accept a small gift in appreciation, amid hearty applause.

Afternoon tea was served

On Saturday evening a social and dance was held, this being an outstanding financial' success. The hall I was packed to capacity. Among-the performers from a distance were Mrs. Potter (song), Miss 'Sybil Williams (monologue and humorous Tecitations), (Miss Sara Walker Miss Joan Collins (Russian and Spanish dances), Mrs. Bait and Miss Young (sketch). Members of-the S.V. Dramatic Circle contributed two plays, tentitled "'The Pacifist" and "No. 10." [Mrs. Cording and all who contributed towards making the evening such a decided success were, warmly thanked and received an ovation. After supper had been served dancing held sway till midnight. The singing of the National Anthem concluded proceedings. .

NURSING DIVISION

The officers and members of the Wellington Nursing Division entertained the cadets and their mothers at a very happy party at.the St. John Ambulance Association rooms, Vivian Street. Games, interspersed with items from the cadets, consisting of piano solos, songs, dance solos, recitations,- and concluding with a camp-fire sing-song from those cadets who were in, camp at Paremata, comprised a very enjoyable programme.

During the evening awards, prizes, and some certificates gained during the year were presented by Mrs. Osborn, Lady Cadet Supervisor, as follows:—Awards: Proficiency badges, Kathleen Outtrim and Doreen Nunns. Prizes: Preliminary hygiene, Betty Rogers; public service, Mary McClure; camping and rambling, Betty Rogers; progress prizes for first-year cadets. Maureen Walsh, Margaret McQuillan, and Noeleen Heaphy; runners-up for E. K. Hay Cup, Teresa Edwards, Molly Aylett; special prize presented by Mrs. Osborn for most helpful cadet to the
