Colonel J. J. Esson, C.M.G., Grand Master of the Masonic Grand Lodge o£ New Zealand, returned to Wellington from the south this morning.

Sir Stephen Allen was a passenger from the south this morning.

The appointment of Mr. Oscar Carraro as Acting Italian Consul in Wellington has been provisionally recoguised.

Dr. A. R. Main, M.A., D.D., principal of the Churches of Christ College of the Bible in Melbourne and editor of the "Australian Christian," will arrive here from the north tomorrow morning in the course of a world tour while he is on a sabbatical year's leave. He attended the Churches of Christ world convention at Leicester, where he was one of the speakers, and made a tour of America. He arrived at Auckland a week ago to' begin a tour of the Dominion. During the weekend he will be in Wellington and wiU preach here on Sunday.-

Mr. H. E. L. Porter,, a notable English Alpine climber, and Mrs. Porter, arrived from England yesterday by the Tamaroa.

Mr. and Mrs. G. Shirtcliffe, of Wellington, returned from England yesterday by the Tamaroa.

Mr. S. H. Gilmer, a brother-in-law of Mrs. Knox Gilmer, who has spent a considerable time in England, returned yesterday by the Tamaroa from ■London.

Dr. M. A. F. Barnett, with his wife and two children, arrived from London by the Tamaroa yesterday after* noon, having been absent from New Zealand for nine months. Dr. Barnett went-to England partly on business for the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, partly on holiday, and partly to make a study of the application of meteorology to aviation. The Meteorological Office in Wellington will have the benefit of his experience when its activities- are widened in the near future with the commencement of commercial aviation, on a large scale.

Mr. P. J. O'Regan was appointed honorary solicitor to the Wellington Discharged Prisoners' Aid Society at the annual meeting yesterday.

Mr. Victor J. Cornaga, representative for New Zealand and the Islands for John Dewar and Sons, Ltd., has just left Auckland on a business trip to Sydney.

Mr. J. F. Riches, New Zealand representative of British Celanese, Limited, who is leaving for England on his principal's business on December 22, was yesterday entertained at afternoon tea at the D.I.C. tearooms by his colleagues on the council of the United Kingdom Manufacturers' and New Zealand Representatives' Association (Inc.). Mr. C. W. Budd, president, in expressing the good wishes of members, referred to the valuable work done by Mr. Riches during his membership on the council, and also welcomed Mr. G. Wright, who will be taking Mr. Riches's place in New Zealand. •■-,-■.

Captain R. S. Lewis, Marine Superintendent- for the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Co., Ltd., at Auckland, returned by the Tamaroa yesterday after a holiday visit to England.

Dr. C. G. F. Morice and Mrs. Morice, who have been on a trip to England, returned yesterday by the Tamaroa from London.

Flying-Officer D. L. Dustin (late of Wellington), a son of Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Dustin, of Wanganui, completes his service in the Royal Air Force' on December 31. Advice has been received that he has passed all examinations for his B licence (commercial flying).

Mr. A. McNeil, senior inspector under the Canterbury Education Board, will retire at the end of January after 40 years' educational experience in the Dominion. His successor is Mr. W. A. Service, senior inspector to the Otago Education JBoard.

The late Mr. McClune, who died last evening from injuries in a motor collision at Kilbirnie earlier in the .day, was an old boy of Wellington College, where he distinguished himself on the sports field as a discus-thrower. He established records in this event both at Wellington College and at the Wellington secondary schools: athletic championship meeting. These'records still stand. He left.'. Wellington College at the end of 1933. Mr. McClune was given tuition in discus' throwing by Sergeant J. W. McHolm, a former New Zealand hammer and discusthrowing champion, and at the last Wellington provincial championship meeting was second in the discus event to the redoubtable P. Munro!
