LAWYER-CAPTAIN
EVENTFUL CAREER
A sea captain turned barrister was an interesting passenger on the Tamaroa . which' arrived from London yesterday afternoon. He is Mr. F. P. Evans, who is returning to his home in Sydney.
For many years Mr. Evans was in the service of the Union Company, being chief officer of the Maheno when she came out from Glasgow in 1905, and receiving his first command twelve months later.
In 1907 Captain Evans was in charge of the collier Koonya, which towed Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship Nimrod from Lyttelton to the edge of the Antarctic ice. This tow of well over 1000 miles was the "farthest south" voyage of any other than a wooden ship. Subsequently Captain Evans commanded the Nimrod on her final voyage to the Antarctic to bring the explorers back to Lyttelton.!
Still later, Captain Evans liad command of several Union Company steamers, including the Aorangi and the Tahiti. While the latter vessel was a troopship during the war years he carried in her many thousands of New Zealand soldiers to Egypt and Fjngland and a number of American troops across the Atlantic. In 1918 he was appointed marine superintendent for the Union Company in Great Britain, and he held that position until he brought the Waiotapu out to New Zealand. In 1921 he was admitted to the Sydney Bar.
