FRENCH BATTLESHIP
The French battleship Dunkerque, which has been floated, out of the building dock at Brest, was laid down over two years ago as a reply to the German "pocket battleship" of 10,000 tons. The Dunkerque is the first battleship to be built in France since 1914. She will displace 26,500 tons and be equipped with turbine engines of 100,000 h.pl for a speed of 30 knots. In all but name, therefore, she is a battle cruiser. A sister ship, to be named Strasbourg, was ordered a year ago. Meanwhile Italy's action in starting two 35,000-toh battleships has compelled France to design an equally powerful type of vessel. The first of these, the France, is to be laid down this year, and a second ship, Verdun, has been authorised. In all, therefore, France will eventually have, under construction 123,000 tons of battleships. Great Britain is debarred by treaty from laying down any capital tonnage before January, 1937.
