DEMAND FOR RAYON AND
WOOL
Good news of the activity in the British textile industries is provided by the monthly figure. of output of artificial silk. British output of yarn and waste rose from 7,540.0001b in August to 9,740,0001b in September The increase was partly seasonal, but the production figure for September last year was only 7,550,0001b Activity in the woollen industry is also on the increase. The index of wages paid, taking 1930 as 100, rose to 104.7 in September, against 98.5 in August and 94.8 in September last year.
The only guide to the activity of the cotton industry—the deliveries of raw cotton to spinners—shows that deliveries of cotton to spinners were 90,000,0001b in September, against 93,000,000 in August and 89,000,000 in September last year. As a gap must naturally ensue between the booking of orders and the delivery of cotton to mills, it is not surprising that that index does not yet reflect the greater volume of business now being reported in the British cotton textile industry.
