KIDNAPPING CASE
ARRESTS IN MARSEILLES
MARSEILLES, December 2,
After four days the police have arrested a woman of 68 and her son, aged 25, the kidnappers of an eighteen-months-old child of Dr. Malmjac, demanding £700 ransom. When the police were about to enter the apartment the son drew a revolver and threatened to kill the child unless the police withdrew. The police shouted: "We promise not to arrest you; don't fire." Then they consulted headquarters; who reinforced them and ordered the arrest to be made, whereupon the police broke in the door, snatched the child, overpowered the son, and arrested the pair, who admitted the crime.
Protection from a crowd of 2000 was necessary to prevent the lynching of the kidnappers. During the search instructions as to how to feed the child were broadcast, as well as a promise from the father to pay the ransom. The police believe that the ransom was not wanted and that the real objective of the kidnapping was to secure a child to represent the heir to an important estate.
