NAZI FOOTBALLERS

ARRIVAL AT CJIOYDON

"FOR GAME'S SAKE ALONE"

(Received December 3, 11.40 a-m.) t LONDON, December 2. i The Association football team from Germany which is to play an EngJ.and Oleven on Wednesday arrived at Ctoydon by air today. The visiting team ha'.s been picked from the- finest sidas in Germany, and an exciting match is, expected. In view of the controversy that has been aroused by the prospect of the match, which is attracting a very .large numfxer of tourists from Germany, it is interesting to note that in an interview on the team's arrival the managing sedretaa.V of the German Football Association, %vho accompanied the team, declared tbut there would be no politics and no demonstration of any sort.

The mat*ch was under discussion this afternoon when the Home Secretary, Sir John" Simon, received a deputation from the Council of the Trade Union Congress. Sir Walter Citrine, the secretary, emphasised that it was quite contrary to Efte council's desire to import any political feeling into sport, but it was tht? opinion of the council that in view o\(. the political character of sport in Germany it was clear that the fixture was being made use of by the German Government for political purposes.

The Home Secretary thanked the deputation lor putting their point of view so clearly before ftim. He had never misunderstood the: council's attitude, but he emphasised what he had said in his letter of November 29, that tlie matter had no political significance whatever. Everything was being done by all concerned to ensure that there would be no provocative demonstrations or incidents. Ttujre would be no organised procession. A large crowd welcomed the team at the aerodrome.

The manager emphasised that they had come for the sake of the game alone, and they would beiiave as guests of Britain in every sense of the word.
