REPUDIATION OF INITIATIVE

According to a statement by the- .Acting Prime Minister, Mr. Ernest Lapointe,.tonight, Dr. Walter Riddell was expressing his own personal opinion and not the views of the Canadian G\~>v ernment when he suggested on November 2 at Geneva to the League oE Nations Committee that the sanctions' against Italy should be extended to in-, elude oil, coal by-products, and iron\ and steel. '■ f
Mr. Lapointe, in his statement, said that the Prime Minister, Mr. Mackenzie King, announced on October 29 that Canada would comply with the financial and economic sanctions programme set forth by the League Coordination Committee. Mr. Lapointe added: "The Government is not taking, and dops not propose to take, the initiative in proposing an extension of the measures with regard to the prohibition of exports to Italy."
