SOME IMPROVED EFFORTS

Midian was still another horse who improved with his first day's race, and in winning the Empire Handicap by two necks from Jubilee Song and Lifeguard he gave further illustration ot what a tricky course Feilding is for the punter. However, Midian stumbled just after landing in the straight on Saturday, and those who noted that were able to collect a good price about him yesterday. The surprise of the race was the unexpected brilliance of Lifeguard, who had gone just moderately among the hacks on the first day. He rushed to the iront early and soon opened up a break of four lengths. Midian singled nimsalt out m pursuit and was only a length away at the straight. Lifeguard, however, hung on well, but his rider was bouncing about on him over the last furlong and Midian cut him down near the close, while Jubilee Song also rushed up to take the other dividend oft him.

Jubilee' Song was another horse to go much better. He was third practically all the way on this occasion, instead of last, but until well in the straight he was two or three lengths behind Midian. He finished with a great rattle. Glenvane, momentarily in the lead after the start from the rail position again, soon went back to fourth and he stayed there. Legatee, the favourite, began well but the field came across him and sent him to a rearward position, from which he did not improve till near the close.
