SPLENDID DISPLAY
TECHNICAL COLLEGE
FAIR
OPENING TOMORROW
Remarkable evidence of.the valuable work being done in providing vocational training for the younger generation is afforded by the Technical College Fair, which opens at the Technical College tomorrow, and will continue the two following days and nights. It is being held to raise money to assist in the building of a new assembly. hall, and for this purpose £1200 is needed, but it serves to show what excellent work is being done by the students in every department— and the college caters for many widelydiffering kinds of work. :
The outstanding feature of the fair is the work of Mr. H. S. Martin, a Christchurch weaving expert, whose work in teaching his art in the Dominion is well known. It is proposed to establish a school of weaving at the college next year, as it is regarded as a very promising mode of selt expression, and if this is. done the school will be the first of its kind in New Zealand. The samples of Mr. Martin's work on view today showed a remarkable variety and very wide range of materials, patterns, and colours. It seemed extraordinary, -as he remarked, that such intricate patterns could be woven on such simple looms, which he made himself. On these looms, bedspreads, curtains, | cushion covers, upholstery, scarves, and tweeds can be made.
Every branch of the college's activities is represented in the fair, however, and in all departments there is work of very high quality. In the art' sections there are etchings and water colours for sale, and there are many examples of artistic metal and leather work.
An' appetising smell and a host of cakes, preserves, Christmas puddings, and sweets fills the home science department, where over 100 puddings alone have been made in all shapes and sizes. The amount of work that has been necessary has been, vof course*, very great, but the results amply justify the extent of the trouble and time that have been expended by the students on the fair.
