ATTACK ON EGYPT
FORMIDABLE DEFENCES
LONDON, November 30.
The authorities at Alexandria are not in the least apprehensive of an Italian attack on Egypt, which, if it eventuated, would take the form of a simultaneous advance of two columns from Libya. The northern column on the coast road would be liable to heavy fire from British warships. The southern column would not encounter resistance as far as Mersa Matruh, but would be subject to aircraft bombing. Even if it carried Mersa Matruh, which is heavily fortified, it would encounter a mile of intersected I trenches and would have to pass the bottleneck of Borgelarab, which is only two miles wide and is bounded by marshes and the sea, raked by mach-ine-gun and artillery fire.
