WELLINGTON NORTH FIGURES
(To thfi Editor.i Sir, —Dealing with election figures in your issue of the 29th, -you mention Wellington North as one of the electorates in which the Labour vote was reduced when compared with that polled in 1931. This is incorrect as thei votes polled by Mr. Chapman in 1931! and 1935 respectively as recorded at! the preliminary counts were as' follows: —1931. 4173; 10.35, 4468. You have fallen into the error of comparing the votes recorded at the
preliminary count in 1935 with those recorded at the official count in 1931. In the latter year, the counting of the postal, absentee, and seamen's votes increased Mr. Chapman's total by 356 votes, and it is only ' reasonable to expect that it will be increased in a similar manner this year.—l am, etc., A. PARLANE. November 29. [The position as stated in our report is correct on the returns published. The Labour vote on Wednesday was 4468, which was 63 votes short of the 1931 final. As our correspondent suggests, the absentee and postal votes may alter the final position.—Ed.]
