MOTORIST'S HIGH SPEED

Details of a chase through the Taita Gorge on October 18 were given by^ inspector J. E. Ainsworth, of the Main Highways.Board, in the Upper/ Hutt Court, yesterday, when lan R. Parkes was charged with driving a. motor-car at a speed that might have been dangerous to the public.

Inspector Ainsworth said that" oh the afternoon'of October 18 he was on his way to Upper Hutt, and in the Taita Gorge a car passed him going south at a high speed. He turned and followed the car over a distance of four miles at a speed of between 70 and 80 miles an hour, and it was not until the closing stages that he was able to overtake it. He estimated the defendant's speed at between 65 and 70 miles per hour. The car, which was a late model, was full of lady passengers, and perhaps it was being tried out for their benefit. A fine of £5 was imposed by the Magistrate (Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M.) Robert Murray was fined' £1 for driving at a speed that might have been dangerous to the public. For exceeding the licensed load with a heavy traffic vehicle, W. J. McGill was fined 30s. . . For driving at a speed dangerous to the public, A. C. Swanson was fined £3. Exceeding the rord load limit with a heavy traffic vehicle cost Peter Robertson 30s. Fines of 10s each were imposed on Jimmy .ling, George Bilderbeck, Maud Curtis, and Ernest Ball for parking in a prohibited area for a longer period than ten minutes. P. S. Darke was fined £2 for exceeding 20 miles per hour in a heavy traffic vehicle, £1 for exceeding the licensed load, and £ 1 for failing to carry the appropriate vehicle authority. Patrick John Kelly was ordered to pay costs for driving in a manner that might have been dangerous.
