Special forecast for Wellington:— Light to moderate westerly winds prevailing. Weather for the most part fine, although cloudy at times and with the possibility of local thunderstorms.
The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today, is for moderate to strong but decreasing south-westerly winds. Scattered passing showers are still probable, mainly in districts with a westerly aspect, but the weather will improve generally and temperatures will be cool.
A rather intense depression crossed the Dominion during the weekend. Saturday's weather was mainly fair; with moderate southerly winds in the North Island and with north-westerlies in the South Island. During Saturday night, however, the weather in all western districts and in the far south rapidly became unsettled with rain, and in and south of Cook Strait northwesterly winds became strong. On Sunday ' morning a south-westerly change occurred over most of the [South Island, and during the afternoon and night the East Coast of the Sauth Island had rain and there was a!.so thunder and hail in places. By this morning moderate to strong southwesterly winds predominated and, while showers were still reported as falling in western districts, most of the East Coast was having fine weather.
In Auckland, except for some light rain early on Sunday morning, the weather over the weekend has been fine with a moderate to fresh' south-wester-ly wind.
It was warm and sunny in Wellington on Saturday with a north-westerly breeze. The wind freshened during Saturday night and rain fell between 4 a.m. and 7.30 a.m. on Sunday morning, nine points being recorded at Kelburn £nd 26 in Lower Hutt. After that, however, the weather rapidly cleared and Sunday was fine and sunny with a moderate north-westerly wind. The hours of bright sunshine on Saturday totalled 9.4, and yesterday 9.5.
Christchurch had fine weather on Saturday with a fresh north-easterly wind, but it was somewhat cloudy during the morning."' On Sunday it was mostly fair with a variable 'wind. A trace of rain fell about 3 p.m., and about 5 p.m. a south-westerly sprang up. Rain fell later until 9.30 p.m., 28 points being recorded. The weather this morning was fine and clear with a strong wind from the south-west.
Dui/idin had fine weather on Saturday with a strong northerly wind. Rain fell during the night when the wind changed to the south-west, 32 points being recorded. The wind on Sunday was south-westerly in direction, and heavy showers fell, totalling 26 points of rain. It was still showery this morning with a moderate south-westerly gale blowing.
