DESCRIBED AS "FAKE"
ME. MUNRO'S SPEECH
LABOUR OPINIONS
(By .Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, November 24. Declaring that the report of the
meeting of Mr.. J. W. Munrc, Labour
:n - candidate for Dunedin North, publish- ■;■■>. Ed in -Friday's "Otago Daily Times," ~'- r was a "fake to' frighten the people of Dunedin and a deliberate attempt to ;„ belittle the Labour Party," Mr. F. '■■•■■■ Jones, Labour, Dunedin South, at a ';" meeting last night, denounced what he ' termed the dirty tactics of the Press, especially the "Otago Daily Times." . •'.„ If the report was not a fake, asked 'ir t Ir' ies> why did not the evening ,;' paper publish it? Mr. Jones went on v' to say that the "Times" was not play- ■'.", ing fair, but was using dirty tactics to discredit the Labour Party, and expressed the conviction that the Press . was afraid that if Labour got into ',' power,-it wouldideal-with some of !i'ts ;'. -privileges. , - . ■ .
Mr. Jones added that some of the words spoken by Mr. Munro lent themselves to reconstruction, and by altering the context of them a false impression had been created. The "Daily Times" had been setting a trap ;to catch someone, and it had certainly caught Mr. Munro. Mr. Jones reiterated that the reDort was a deliberate fake, and that Mr. Munro's remarks had been wilfully misrepresented. It can be stated that the non-publica-tion in the Dunedin "Evening Star" of the report of Mr. Munro's meeting is explained by the fact that the "Star" did not have a representative at the meeting.
