AT WORSER BAY

The Worser Bay Boating Club's first race was scheduled for last Saturday in a very fickle wind which displayed no marked partiality for any one point of the compass. No boats finished 'within the time limit and the race was abandoned.

The race was resailed on Sunday morning in a light northerly. There was an excellent field and everyone was confident of securing honours. Kathleen was first away closely followed by Spitfire and Mabelle. The wind was prone to fade away, however, at frequent intervals and did not suit the majority of the boats. [Kathleen and Mabelle had a good ract

about a mile off Point Jerningham. There was no chance to lower the dinghy, as the skipper was the only experienced hand aboard, the two others being novices. "He had to'get one of them to stand by to take over the tiller at the right moment, and he sailed three times round the submerged yacht, and each time reached over and grabbed up an exhausted boy. Only his exceptional strength of arm made it possible, as it was a terrific strain and had to be timed to a nicety as the Seabird leaned over into the wind and rushed by. I saw the curious manoeuvres from Oriental Terrace and came down to the boat harbour when the yacht came in. One of the crew told me the story while the skipper borrowed a car to. run the half-drowned boys home."

Special mention of the many services rendered Manawatu cricket by Mr. J. H. Phillipps, of Wellington, was made by the chairman (Mr. A. M. Ongley) at this week's meeting of the Manawatu Cricket Association. A proposal that, in recognition of these services, Mr. Phillipps be invited to attend the trial country match (to be played in. Palmerston North) as the guest of the Manawatu Cricket Association met with the unanimous approval of the meeting.
