THE FAIRY BELLRINGER

(For Betty.? One day a little girl named Betty went out on. the hills to gather the wild flowers she loved so much. She' returned home with a huge bunch of bluebells. Every day she gave them fresh water to drink and, strange to say, one bluebell seemed to grow larger and prettier than the rest. One bright day, on Betty's ninth birthday, she noticed dainty frills I peeping out of the bluebell, and out came a little fairy, dressed in blue. Her hat was a tiny bluebell and her frock a bigger bluebell. She had small shoes and stockings of green and beautiful silver wings. "Oh, you are a bluebell baby," gasped Betty. "I've always wanted to see one like you." ."I am the fairy bellringer," the fairy answered.. "Every day at sunrise and at sunset I ring the bluebells when it is time for the fairies and elves to set off on their good works. The Radio Fairies visit all the sick little girls and boys and bring them health germs and also carry fairy presents on birthdays. Then there are the Flower Fairies, Betty, who make your gardens beautiful by painting the' flowers 'glorious colours, so you will be happy, when you see them all glowing in the sunshine. Well, Betty, I must go now," said the fairy, "and I wish everyone of your birthdays to be happy ones." Carefully folding, her; silver wings and stepping daintily back into the bluebell, she .disappeared, leaving Betty a very happy little girl. "JAN" (8). Lower Hutt.
