A SEW MOTOR-SHIP

C. AND D. LINE'S ORDER

News that. an order for another motor cargo liner has been placed on the Tyne by the Commonwealth and Dominion Line has been received by Mr. Warwick C. Gregory, local director of -the line. The order has been placed with Swan, Hunter, and Wigham Richardson, Ltd., Newcastle-on-Tyne, and is for the construction of a large, fast motor-ship for service about December, 1936.

The new ship, which has been | specially designed for the refrigerated and general cargo services of the Commonwealth and Dominion Line between New Zealand and Australia and the United Kingdom, will measure 495 ft 6in in length and 68ft in breadth. The new ship will be propelled by twin screws, driven by two sets of Doxford opposed-piston Diesel oil-engines, and will have a service speed in excess of 16 knots. The new ship will be the largest motor-liner in the Commonwealth and Dominion Line's fleet, which will then include 11 motor-ships. The Port Wyndham, of 8580 tons, and the Port Townsville, 8661 tons gross register, are the most recent additions to the fleet. They measure, respectively, 495 ft 6in and 496 ft 6in in length and each has a breadth of 65.2 ft. The ship just ordered is thus much about the same length, but will measure three feet more in breadth.

The third annual display of the Wellington Inter-house Girls' Association is being held at the Basin Reserve this afternoon under glorious conditions. The various competitions, which include athletic events, marching, and drill, are being keenly contested, and thoroughly appreciated by the spectators.
