R.S.A. APPRECIATION
Regret at the death of Earl Jellicoe Admiral of the Fleet, and appreciation of his qualities as the friend of exservicemen, were expressed at a special general meeting of the Wellington Returned Soldiers' Association last night The president (Lieut.-Colonel A Cowles, V.D.), said Earl Jellicoe had been well known to returned soldiers as a popular Governor-General of New Zealand. They all had a certain amount of affection for him because, when they were in France, he had bottled up the German Fleet after the Battle of Jutland, and had later proved himself _ the friend of all ex-servicemen, having been president of the Empire Service League.
"I propose," said Colonel Cowles, "with your permission, to write to his widow expressing our appreciation of bis past friendship and regret at his death."
This suggestion was agreed to, all present standing in silence.
