CONFERENCE DELEGATES
ENTERTAINED AT DINNER
Delegates to the annual conference of the New Zealand Manufacturers' n Federation, at present being held in p Wellington, were given a dinner at the 1 Grand Hotel last night by the Welling- p ton Manufacturers' Association. B Mr. Lan Matheson, president of the E local association, presided, and in welcoming the guests he stressed the great I' value of the New Zealand Federation in dealing with questions of policy. The toast of the federation, coupled c with the name'of the retiring presi- J dent, Mr. J.iHogg, was proposed by Mr. F. Campbell, who said that sound de- J velopment of the manulactures of New Zealand could not be left entirely .> to the individual associations. It was the function of the federation, which 1 was serving an important purpose in j planning for a well-balanced economy s for New Zealand. The work of the i federation,- said Mr. Campbell, should embrace, such problems as. market research, the establishment of standards i of quality, laboratory tests, and investi- I gation of industrial conditions. ' Although good work had been done by i the federation in placing before the 1 Government the claims of industry in ] New Zealand, it had by no means reached the limit of its capabilities. The retiring president, Mr. Hogg, on behalf of the visiting delegates, thanked the Wellington. Association for its hospitality, and gave an interesting and ' instructive talk on matters affecting industry in New Zealand. The deliberations of the federation, he said; must ' mean the strengthening of local units. ! In proposing the toast of Hie presi- i dent-elect, Mr. D. Henry, the immediate •' past-president of the Wellington Manu- , facturers' Association, Mr. W. MeLay, ; paid a tribute to Mr. Henry's sterling qualities as a business man and as a citizen. ( Replying, Mr. Henry referred to the ( efficient manner in which the federa- ' tion had handled affairs in the past.
