TONS OF MAIL
HOME FOR CHRISTMAS
The main rush of Christmas mail for Great Britain was sent from "Wellington over a period of eleven days, beginning on November 7, and during that time approximately 25 tons of mail matter went out by direct boats. In addition to this, heavy mails were forwarded via North America, and the postings to Australia and the East have been above normal.
The last of the direct mail went by the Rangitiki, which sailed from Napier, and of this the overseas branch of the Wellington Post Office handled 300 bags of second class and 87 bags of first class matter, and 27 bags of parcels, a total of 414 bags, or 1 ton scwt of first class and 7 tons 6cwt of second class matter. For the three boats approximately 22J tons of second class and 2 tons of first class matter were handled in Wellington.
The first of the Christmas mail for the East was sent away by the Wanganella yesterday. Including ordinary Australian mail, 262 bags and several parcel receptacles were loaded, 153 of the bags being from Wellington. Since the beginning of the month 522 bags of Australian and Eastern mail have been shipped from Wellington.

FALSE STATEMENTS
Five charges of making false statements and obtaining benefits under the Unemployment Act were preferred against Wilfred Henry Gladstone Brown, who appeared before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today. He was fined £10 on the first charge, and convicted and discharged on the others. -^ The certifying officer for the Unemployment Board stated that the defendant had said he was unemployed, when actually he had been acting as an insurance agent for a considerable period. Hoy Chote was fined 30s and costs for making a false statement under the Act.
